Established in Jerusalem in 1892, the National Library of Israel is a major cultural institution located along Jerusalem’s museum mile. Despite challenges faced during Israel’s War of Independence, the library’s extensive collections, which include around 4.5 million books, manuscripts, maps, archives, posters, photographs and other rare items, were preserved. After ten plus years of renovations, the National Library reopened in late 2023. The absolutely stunning space is situated within a 46,000-square-meter (495,000-square-foot) building, spanning across 11 stories, five of which are underground. It was designed by Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron in collaboration with the local Israeli Mann Shinar architectural team, to resemble a giant opened book. The National Library aims to serve diverse communities worldwide as a center of scholarship, cultural life and creativity.
